Breast Cancer : The Best Ways To Prevent And Fight
Breast cancer is a type of cancer that forms in the cells of the breast. Breast cancer can occur in
both men and women, but it is most common in women. Breast cancer can be a very serious
disease, but it is also one of the most treatable types of cancer if it is caught early.
Types Of Breast Cancer
There are two main types of breast cancer: invasive breast cancer and non-invasive breast
cancer. Invasive breast cancer means that the cancer has spread from the milk ducts or lobules
where it began, to other parts of the breast. Non-invasive breast cancer means that the cancer
is still confined to its place of origin.
Invasive breast cancers are further classified into four subtypes, based on how the cells look
under a microscope:
- Infiltrating ductal carcinoma (IDC) – The most common type of invasive breast cancer,
accounting for about 80% of all cases. It begins in the milk ducts and spreads to surrounding
tissues. - Infiltrating lobular carcinoma (ILC) – Starts in the milk-producing lobules and accounts for
about 10% of all invasive breast cancers. ILC is often found in both breasts at the same time. - Invasive micropapillary carcinoma – A very rare type of IDC that accounts for less than 1% of
all invasive breast cancers. It is characterized by small, nipple-like growths called papillae that
invade nearby tissues. - Invasive tubular carcinoma – Another rare type of IDC that represents about 2% of all cases.
It is characterized by abnormal cells that grow in tubes, or tubes lined with epithelial cells
(tubules).
Signs and symptoms of breast cancer
There are many signs and symptoms of breast cancer, but the most common symptom is a
lump or mass in the breast. Other common symptoms include changes in the size or shape of
the breast, skin changes, nipple discharge, and pain in the breast or armpit. If you experience
any of these symptoms, it’s important to see a doctor right away for a diagnosis.
Breast cancer can also be diagnosed through screenings, such as mammograms or Breast MRI.
If you’re considered high risk for breast cancer (e.g., you have a family history of the disease),
your doctor may recommend more frequent screenings.
Treatment for breast cancer
There are a number of different treatment options for breast cancer, and the best course of
action will depend on the individual case. Surgery is often the first step in treatment, and may
be followed by radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy. Targeted therapies are
also sometimes used. Clinical trials may also be an option for some people.
The most important thing is to work with a team of medical professionals to create a treatment
plan that is right for you. Treatment for breast cancer has come a long way in recent years, and
there are now more options than ever before. With early detection and proper treatment,
many people with breast cancer can go on to live long and healthy lives.
Prevention of breast cancer
There are a number of things women can do to reduce their risk of developing breast cancer.
Firstly, maintaining a healthy weight is important. Women who are overweight or obese have
an increased risk of developing the disease.
Secondly, regular exercise is also key. Women who exercise regularly have a lower risk of
developing breast cancer than those who don’t.
Thirdly, eating a healthy diet is important. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can
help reduce a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.
Fourthly, drinking alcohol in moderation can also help reduce the risk. Women who drink
alcohol in moderation (one drink per day) have a lower risk of developing breast cancer than
those who don’t drink at all.
Finally, avoiding tobacco is also important. Women who smoke cigarettes have an increased
risk of developing breast cancer.
